File 001 · Napa Valley, California

The legends were never meant to stay buried.

Beyond the vineyards, old roads climb into oak woodland. Cemetery gates stand closed. Lights move where no road should be. And something with wings is watching.

Original illustrated episodes and field sightings begin August 26.

The Partrick Road Encounter

Three teenagers, one borrowed car, and the road where the Napa legend began. The engine should not have stopped. The trees should not have moved.

More strange California

Haunted roads, unexplained lights, forgotten resorts, cryptids, cemeteries, and landscapes reclaiming the places people left behind.

An illustrated Rebob with a primate body, long tail, and a single pair of bat wings

Field identification

Half primate. Half bat. Entirely Napa.

The Rebobs are winged creatures said to inhabit the hills west of the Napa Valley—especially the oak woodland and cemetery country around Partrick Road.

Some frighten away anyone who comes looking. Some distrust humans for good reason. Others protect places that should never be found. The children can be curious and kind, but they are only one part of a much older and more complicated world.

Habitat
Oak woodland, grassland, redwood and conifer forest
Known signs
Wingbeats, strange lights, movement above the road
Disposition
Individual—protective, wary, cunning, distrustful, or good

“In the Napa Valley, the wild places remember what the roads forgot.”

The Rebob Files

Known inhabitants

Not every Rebob tells the same story.

The named characters appear when their stories call for them. Other encounters may involve creatures whose names—and intentions—remain unknown.

Jetson, a huge muscular gorilla-like Rebob with visible fangs and bat wings
01

Jetson

Heavy, muscular, intimidating, and cunning. Jetson distrusts humans and has little patience for anyone who crosses into Rebob territory.

Captain Salamander, a hunched primate Rebob in a pirate hat and red vest with a gadget belt
02

Captain Salamander

A hunched, scrunch-faced Rebob in a pirate hat—not a salamander. His red vest and gadget belt are usually surrounded by the latest evidence of his relentless tinkering.

Janice, a thin feminine Rebob with bat wings, visible fangs, and a cunning expression
03

Janice

Thin, watchful, and always calculating. The glint in her eye usually means she noticed you long before you noticed her.

Roger, a very large Rebob in a suit and sunglasses guarding a cemetery gate
04

Roger

An imposing guardian in a suit, Roger protects the Partrick family property and cemetery. Intruders rarely stay long enough to discover that the frightening guard at the gate is one of the good ones.

Marigold, a small young Rebob in an aviator cap with monarch wings and a butterfly on her finger
05

Marigold

A small, curious, cautiously friendly young Rebob with monarch wings, an aviator cap, and a gift for communicating with animals and insects. Marigold appears only in the stories that belong to her.
